Practice makes perfect: A Hampstead Heath wedding shoot

Having signed up to a ton of wedding blogs over the last year, my Insta feed these days is pretty much 80% wedding shoots (plus 20% dogs/style bloggers). That’s a whole lot of smug newly-weds among the cavaliers and #OOTDs. So when my blogger friend Roberta mentioned that her very talented photographer Lorna Milburn was looking for a couple to shoot for her Story Wedding Photography website, I jumped at the chance to have a go myself. Great practice for next June – and Zoolander Pete didn’t take much persuading! It turns out that Lorna is not only an incredible photographer (if we hadn’t already paid the deposit on our guy, we’d be dragging her down to Devon with us next summer) but also just about the sweetest person I’ve ever met. She put us completely at ease and made an icy hour up on Hampstead Heath enormous fun, despite gale force winds! In fact, we ended up clambering over fences and under bushes in an attempt to get her the best shots and loved every second of it. Even if I did spend the next morning picking foliage out of my hair (and knickers?!), it was all worth it for the beautiful photos – the reds and burnt sienna of the trees around the lake provided the perfect romantic setting, complementing the autumnal colours in my stunning bouquet by Hattie Fox at That Flower Shop.

My hair and make-up were done by the gorgeous Annabel Spurrier at Beauty Call; Belle worked magic on my face between bites of chocolate brioche and cups of tea served up by Lorna. A situation I could easily get used to. We went for a slightly disheveled rock chick look with heavy eye make-up and plum lips, plus undone waves that became wildly messy in the wind later on! Oh, and it took a lot of willpower not to steal that incredible beaded headband away with me. It’s by Clara Francis, a designer whose jewelry I now have a beady eye on…

The corseting and layers of big white tulle on this vintage gown are about as far removed from my own wedding dress as you could get but, to be honest, that made wearing it all the more fun. Plus, my Uterque cardigan (similar here) and Topshop biker went some way to counter the girliness (as did the black ankle boots and thick tights I had hiding underneath!) Pete’s suit is his own from ASOS (similar here) and the Doctor Who-inspired maroon scarf, bow tie and braces looked fab against the autumn heath. My fiance is fit. That’s all.

Thanks Lorna for doing such a amazing job and getting us even more excited about the real deal next year!
